    Your guess

A daily game about what things used to cost

Pricedle gives you five items a day, each from a different year. You get one guess at each price, and the closer you land, the more you score. A guess within 5 percent earns the full 100 points, for a best possible day of 500.

You see the same five items as everyone else, and a new set arrives at midnight. Each answer also shows the price in today's money, so you can see what really got more expensive and what only looks that way.

    Where the prices come from

Grocery, gas, electricity, pay and house prices are official U.S. figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau and the Department of Labor, published through the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Grocery prices are yearly averages of monthly city data. Big Mac prices come from The Economist's Big Mac Index. Launch prices come from the sources linked on each answer, which are mostly Wikipedia articles.

Today's money uses the Consumer Price Index, so it reflects average inflation and may differ from the current price of that item. All prices are in U.S. dollars.

    Leaderboards and your data

When you finish a day, your guesses are added to the crowd numbers with no name attached. Join the leaderboard and you get a random name such as Thrifty Otter. Friend leagues show the name you choose, only to people with the league's code.

Pricedle has no accounts and never asks for your email. Your place is tied to this browser, so clearing its data or changing phones starts you again. You can remove yourself at any time from the leaderboard window.

    How to play

    1. Read the tag. Each round shows an item and a year.
    2. Enter a price. Use the keys on screen or your keyboard. The latest price and that year's minimum wage are there to help.
    3. Ring it up. You get one try. A guess within 5 percent earns 100 points, and a guess three times off earns none.

Play all five rounds to finish the day. Your streak grows when you play on the day, and past days never affect it.

Join the leaderboard to compete today and across the week, or start a league with friends.
